2020, book 3: Chocolate: the consuming passion, Sandra Boynton

Unsurprisingly adorable.

2020, book 2: I was a teenage dominatrix: a memoir, Shawna Kenney

Surprisingly good. (Kenney is now a writer, which no doubt helped.)

2020, book 1: Without their permission: How the 21st century will be made, not managed, Alexis Ohanian

At times very preachy.
Very positive about YC.
Downright fawning over Paul Graham.
Very consumer-oriented; not b2b.

The main thesis is "it's easy to make stuff on the internet, you don't need tons of money or expertise to do so". It's the American Dream myth for the early 21st century.

Make something people want. If no one wants it, it doesn't matter how you package it or try to sell it.

Be passionate. If you are not ready to jump in a lake for your idea, don't bother.

Alexis's interview questions are pretty good:

  1. What have you built? (Especially outside of work.)
  2. You’re interviewing for job X. How do you feel about doing Y (where Y is barely in the scope of X)?
  3. What about working at a start-up appeals to you?
  4. If you could do absolutely anything for a living, what would you do?
