3: Jazz on the Barbary Coast, Tom Stoddard

In preparation for my jazz dance history lecture, in particular, because of the Texas Tommy.

Among many other interesting tidbits, there's the first mention of the word "jazz" in print (March 6th, 1913). In a description of the Spring training of the San Francisco Seals, we learn that Art Hickman went up to play "ragtime and 'jazz'" for the baseball players:

The players are just brimming over with that old 'Texas Tommy' stuff and there is a bit of the 'jazz' in everything they do.

In the same place, Stoddard claims that Bechet always called the music "ragtime". I have to check with Mielke and Hadlock, but I doubt that's true.

Of particular interest to me for the dance lecture were all the mentions of Texas Tommy, Turkey Trot, Pavlova, and Purcell's. For the music lecture I noted, though it's been stated many places, Le Protti's identification of 4-beat rhythm and plucked bass both coming from New Orleans. God forgive me that last sentence, and my laziness at not cleaning it up.
